Garden and Yard, Winterized

DSCF5300This may be the last post on the garden site, at least for this year.  I've barely kept this site updated this year.  I was hoping that my wife would enjoy posting here, she did a few posts, but that has not happened.  I guess I'll just have to see what happens here next year.

The east garden got the last of our straw a week or so after the last post.  I had to get more so we could add some to the west garden.

We have more than enough garden space and have not been utilizing it to its fullest.  Time is a big factor, so is laziness.  No berries for us this year.

All leaves have been raked, mulched  for the flowerbeds or mowed into the lawn.  Gutters are clean, composted dirt emptied and deterrent spread for whatever has been shitting in my yard.  Only the gnome and a few decorative stakes have yet to be put away.  Some dead plants will have to be removed in spring, this fall has been so mild I let them continue on.

Late October

DSCF5204Yesterday, Kate planted the garlic for spring.  Covered so it stays planted.

We already mixed in lots of home made compost soil.  There are herbs still near the bottom.

DSCF5205

The east garden is the same mess of non-raspberries and strawberries for the squirrels.

The stump flowers show the wear of summer and a frost.  The big one in back was uprooted and it's roots eaten.  The yellow ones died after the frost.  Others have been stunted by always being dug in by animals and being in pots.  Yard tour after the break.

Early September Checking In

DSCF5075I've been neglecting my sites lately.  Not on purpose, though.  I guess I haven't had anything to say.  Not much has been happening with the garden, except we have been drying basil all week in the dehydrator.  The plants in the yard are doing well but some are showing the wear of late summer.

A tour of the yard is after the break.

Garlic!

DSCF4872Kate harvested the garlic this evening.  I asked if that was enough for a year, she laughed and said "No."

I love that she is a wonderful cook!

Next time we may plant more.

Mid-July Pics

DSCF4854West garden is where the action is, not a whole lot goin' on in the east garden.

DSCF4856

The cucumber plant among the stump flowers is doing well.  We kept it from attaching to the potted flowers but it did grab on to the hostas.  It will be moved when the monster fall-bloomer next to it is needing more room.

Wild Tomatoes

DSCF4839...are growing in the east garden.  Yesterday, Kate harvested the remaining lettuce and some basil.  Today she replanted a bunch of seeds.

New Plants, Other Thoughts

DSCF4796
Kate planted some new plants in the west garden above the garlic, not easily seen from my normal shot so I took a special picture.

DSCF4798I haven't been very inspired to post here this year.  I've been keeping it up because I might get back into it and I feel I shouldn't have a big gap in time between posting, especially during growing season.  And I would hate to just stop after all this time.  I've tried to get my wife involved in it a little, and she started to post last year, but she isn't much interested now, either.

So what do I do?
I just don't know yet.

Late May Update

DSCF4742I've been trying to get Kate to post so she can tell you what's what.  I know the east garden is strawberries and raspberries, we covered it with the netting last weekend.  And the west garden has garlic and a couple lettuces and other stuff.

Onions!

Kate has been doing lots of weeding and harvested the spring onions.  The picture is not even all of them.  She is part of our neighborhood farcebook page and offered the extra up to the neighbors yesterday.  As of an hour or so they are all gone to good homes so we did not have to waste any.

DSCF4686

DSCF4715These were given to us by a coworker last year.  We had never grown them before and did not know what to expect, especially due to the mild and up and down winter we had.  They are just like what you think of as a green onion, except these are quite a bit larger.

DSCF4716In the west garden the onions are gone, what you see there still is garlic.  You can see some small things growing in rows in the bottom half.  I'm still trying to get Kate to write here so she can tell you what is where.

The east garden has been weeded and we got out the cover I slapped together last year to keep the squirrels out.  Raspberries on top, strawberries below.

What A Difference...

DSCF4672... a week can make.  Kate has spent much time in the yard and garden again this week, trying to keep ahead of the weeds, planting in the garden and keep up with the growing plants we have.  I don't remember all that she planted in the west garden, she'll have to write something to explain what's what when they start sprouting.

Like last week, I took another picture tour of the yard.  It really is amazing how some things have grown in the last week.  Click Read More below!

Garden Work and Yard Tour

DSCF4642 B

DSCF4638The weather seems to have finally accepted that Spring is here.  Temperatures have been very nice this weekend, we even have the windows open, finally.  Yesterday Kate spent much time in the yard and gardens weeding and removing the winter's hay, and getting the compost soil better distributed.  Not all the work is done, but everything seems to finally be on schedule.

I went out yesterday and took pictures of her work and of all our flowers and plants and what stage of spring growth they are in.  Click Read More below for all those pictures!
